Palm Synchronization

You can easily and quickly synchronize your data between SKYRiX and Palm; your contacts, enterprises, appointments and jobs. Your Palm requires an English Palm-OS as well as a sync-client. The sync-client is required only for establishing a connection between Palm and SKYRiX. Your client must be furnished with a Palm Desktop Software which contains the Hot-Sync Manager.

Synchronizing appointments

From Palm to SKYRiX

Any appointments you want to transfer from Palm to SKYRiX must be declared as "private" (at Read Access in the Appointment Editor). That way you prevent your appointments to be published for all SKYRiX-users. The only detail they can see, is that there is an appointment, but they can not see its details.

Appointments declared as "cyclically" will not be transferred to SKYRiX. (at Cycle in the Appointment Editor) Moreover, appointments having no time statements will also not be transferred, because such events can better be handled by SKYRiX job application.

From SKYRiX to Palm

Appointments transferred from SKYRiX to Palm will be inserted into the Palm calendar without a category. Any associated notes will be transferred, too. Cyclic appointments will be converted to an appropriate set of single appointments. Any associated notes will be transferred, too. Appointments extending over several days will not be synchronized.

Synchronizing jobs

As for synchronization, jobs are handled as own jobs on principle. Their current status will be accordingly adapted.

Synchronizing contacts and enterprises

Settings in SKYRiX

Open the Person Editor respectively the Enterprise Editor. Expand the section Extended, where you can find an option called Palm Sync (Private). Ensure, that this check-box is enabled. Use the text field Palm Category (Private) below the check-box to input a category. Note, that the same category must exist also in the Palm.

Settings in the Palm

As mentioned, for synchronizing your contacts and enterprises applications you can specify any categories you want. Don"t forget to create the same categories within your Palm"s address application.

Synchronizing from Palm to SKYRiX

To synchronize from Palm to SKYRiX, the desired data must be assigned to the category "SKYRiX". Note, that the transfer of contacts and enterprises is performed in public, i.e. the data synchronized will be visible for everybody.

Synchronizing from SKYRiX to Palm

Contacts and enterprises synchronized to the Palm, will there automatically be assigned to that category, which you had specified before. (see chapter 11.3.2.)

The category "removed"

Additional to those categories you have already created, you are recommended to create a category called "removed" in each application.

Palm Synchronization for a Linux-client

Requirements

If your Palm is already furnished with a German Palm-OS version 3.5 or an English Palm-OS you can skip this paragraph. The problem of the several Palm-OS respectively Palm-Desktop versions is their missing ability for synchronizing via network. Their way of synchronizing (to a desktop computer) is not enough to establish a connection to a SKYRiX server. To upgrade the required network feature, install a Palm Hot-Sync update from, http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/netsync.html For updating, please follow the instructions in your Palm Manual.

Palm-Settings

The memo-list of the Palm must contain a memo called "SKYRiX" consisting of the following three lines for inputting the user/password identification which is used in the SKYRiX Groupware Server:

<Skyrix> (please follow the notation exactly!)
        <user> the SKYRiX-user
<password> the password of the user

The SKYRiX-memo must be declared as private, because only private memos are scanned by SKYRiX.

  • · Enable "Local" and "Direct serial" in the Hot-Sync software.
  • · Furthermore, select "LAN Sync" from the menu item LAN-Sync-Preferences
  • · In the menu item Primary-PC-Setup, the full name of the SKYRiX server (for example: skyrix.skyrix.com) as well as its IP-number must be declared.

Client-Settings

Linux-Settings

At Linux clients, the Network-Hot-Sync-client (nhsc) needs to be restarted before each synchronization. You can find the nhsc at the SKYRiX server at:

        '/opt/skyrix/skyrix38/Tools/ix86/linux-gnu/nhsc'.

Copy it to the client, for example to /usr/local/bin/.

To start nhsc manually, type-in the following instruction:

'/usr/local/bin/nhsc /dev/ttyS0` (if the docking station is connected at COM1)

or:

`/usr/local/bin/nhsc /dev/ttyS1` (if the docking station is connected at COM2)

To start nhsc automatically, insert the following entry into /etc/inittab :

        # nhsc (SKYRiX/Palm Sync Client) sx:23:respawn:/usr/local/bin/nhsc / dev/ttyS0
(if the docking station is connected at COM1)
        or
        # nhsc (SKYRiX/Palm Sync Client) sx:23:respawn:/usr/local/bin/nhsc / dev/ttyS1
(if the docking station is connected at COM2)

The attributes Palm Sync and Palm Category are private. That gives each single user the chance to decide for himself, which data he want to synchronize.

The following Palm Desktop Software containing the required Hot-Sync Manager must be installed on the Windows-client, http://www.palmone.com/us/software/desktop/

Having installed Hot-Sync, its icon appears in the Windows task bar. Click on this icon to open a menu, and there enable the items "Local" and "Network". Furthermore, click on the item "Setup..." to check up some basic settings:

In the tab-sheet "Local" you can select the correct COM connection, while the user can be selected in the tab-sheet "Network".

If a Windows dialog is appearing while synchronizing, asking you for the primary PC, always press the "No"-button! Responding "Yes" makes the Hot-Sync-software setting the IP-address and PC-name to your local host. Before synchronizing again, set these data back to the SKYRiX server by using the menu item "Primary-PC-Setup".
